Wood ants are charismatic, iconic, ecologically dominant and they are keystone species. They construct obvious nest mounds and superficially their behaviour is easily observed but it is not necessarily easily understood. Aimed at field naturalists this is an afternoon dedicated to these amazing creatures. It will give us some insight into their behaviour and outline ongoing projects including some to which we (citizen science!) can contribute.

Presenters will include Elva Robinson, Professor in Ecology, University of York and members of her behavioural ecology lab. Elva and the lab group have been studying Northern Hairy Wood Ant populations on the National Trust Longshaw Estate for 15 years. The Longshaw population of this insect is one of the nationally significant populations.
