The latest issue of the Yorkshire Red Kites newsletter has just been published and can be downloaded here. This year's monitoring of breeding sites shows reduced breeding success in North and West Yorkshire, possibly due to the harsh weather. Sadly, persecution of Red Kites and other raptors continues to be a serious problem in Yorkshire; the newsletter provides details of injuries and fatalities due to shooting, trapping and poisoning and emphasises the importance of members of te public reporting such offences. If you come across a suspected wildlife crime, please phone the Police on 101, ask to speak to a Wildlife Crime Officer and request an incident number. Suspected poisonings should be reported to the Wildlife Incident Investigations Scheme on 0800 321600. The RSPB has a confidential Raptor Crime Hotline on 0300 999 0101.
For further information visit the Yorkshire Red Kites website, which now includes a map of reported kite sightings. We are grateful to the YNU's Bird Protection Liaison Officer, Doug Simpson MBE, for providing this newsletter.
