The Land and Freshwater Mollusca

Yorkshire is one of the best recorded counties in Britain for the land and freshwater mollusca with over 45,000 individual records from over 2,900 sites now in our database. These records have been produced by over 140 different recorders over the past 300 or more years. The earliest site specific records date back to Dr Martin Lister who recorded nearly 30 species in 1674, some of which can be located to identifiable sites within Yorkshire.

Marine Mollusca

The data covering the marine mollusca is much more fragmentary, with few reliable records pre-dating 1900. The nomenclature, like the land and freshwater lists, has changed drastically over the past 110 years but unlike the land and freshwater species very few of the marine records can be checked against specimens in museums. The main marine collections covering the Yorkshire coast no longer exist and only small quantities of usually the more common species from these earlier collections can still be identified. The largest of these collections, that of F.H. Wood, was destroyed by the bombing of the Hull Museum in WW2. However, in recent years work has begun on trying to update and establish the status of all old records, and we would welcome any help in developing further the list published here.

Yorkshire is divided into 2 different sea areas, whose boundaries differ from the two vice-counties which border the North Sea. Thus some species are recorded from these sea-areas but originate from sites both to the north and south of the county. A number of these have never been confirmed as living on the Yorkshire Coast.
